shop: handmade mart.

This Sunday, May 31st, I'll be volunteering at Handmade Mart. Powered by the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center, the Handmade Mart will host more than 50 independent crafters for a unique shopping experience along the bustling Ellsworth Drive in Downtown Silver Spring.

My good friend, Debbie (of 60 bugs) is organizing this event, and I thought it would be a lot of fun to support independent artists by volunteering. If you are in the neighborhood, swing by. For more information, please visit: http://www.pyramidatlanticartcenter.org/handmademart/

de*nada: a/w 09 line preview.

Our new autumn/winter line debuts in a few weeks! I am filled with excitement, and can not wait til then. So to compromise with my anxiety and logic, here is a mini (very mini) preview of our soon-to-debut line.

Inspired by the culture and the traditions of my Peruvian heritage, my goal with this growing collection is to combine traditional elements with inspirations that I see and get from modern trends and styles. My autumn/winter collection consists of 20 new styles of scarves, hats and gloves handmade in gorgeous tones of grays, purples, and olives (to name only a few). The overall feeling I get and wanted to express with this line is more of a classic, sophisticated one with bits of somber weaved in.

To see my entire line, please stay tuned til June.

loves: stripping down.

Well, not me personally and definitely not in public. But I just the love the concept of these two music videos ... the whole "who gives a sh**" attitude. Strutting down the street stripping down to nothing at all. Brilliant!

inspirations: urban landscape.

When I start thinking about a new collection, I rarely sketch at first. For me, I think ... a lot. I have to visualize first a concept, and if that idea passes all my questions of doubt, then I proceed to sketch. Even when I use to sculpt and paint, I would follow this same process ... and it didn't help that my thesis was focused on conceptual art. I would stay in my studio for hours till I reached an initial draft. I've learned though that being outside, going out for walks, to a show or film, helps me with my process. Lately, one of my obsessions is urban landscapes. DC, luckily, offers beautiful photo ops. I've been taking tons of pictures during my walks, and hopefully, with all these photographs I will be able to narrow down my idea for next year's collection.

inspirations: walks.

The past several days, it has been raining like cats and dogs in Washington, DC. Obviously, rainy days are great for nature, but not really for my mental state. However this past weekend, mother nature finally gave us a break. The weather was beautiful! One of my favorite things to do, is to take walks with my dog, Mia. I make sure to bring my camera with me just in case something catches my eye ... it may be the inspiration for my next collection. Here are a few photos from my walk.
