the sadat lectures.

In November 2001, I won first prize for 2-dimensional work in The Sadat Art for Peace Competition, sponsored by Suzanne F. Cohen in memory of her late husband Nathan L. Cohen, LAW '69 This competition selects the best artwork depicting the theme of peace and reconciliation, and is held in conjunction with the annual Sadat Lecture for Peace.
My piece entitled, Media and Its Words was given to Nelson Mandela on the occasion of the Sadat Lecture for Peace. Listening to Nelson Mandela speak that evening was amazing. And to see him hold my artwork after his speech, was such an honor. It's an experience that I will never forget.
Several weeks ago, I was contacted by my (*awesome) college art professor, Dawn Gavin ... who informed me that my award-winning piece and essay was included in a commemorative book: The Sadat Lectures: Words and Images on Peace, 1997-2008 by Shibley Telhami. And just a few days ago, I received a copy of it!
The book is absolutely fantastic, and includes lectures by Jehan Sadat, Ezer Weizman, Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger, George Mitchell, Nelson Mandela, Kofi Annan, Mary Robinson, James Baker III, Mohamed ElBaradei, with concluding thoughts by Aaron David Miller.

art: sara neufeld.
Since I've started de*nada a few years back, I've been extremely lucky in finding interns, who are not only great to work with, but who are also very creative and talented in what they love to do.
For example, my current intern, Sara, is a fabulous photographer. She is currently photographing de*nada's upcoming autumn + winter 2010 collection, which will be debuting on our online shop in July 2010 ... stay tuned!
Recently, Sara finished a project, entitled "Tiny Lives" ... "a five part black and white series shot on 35mm film and printed on 11x14 inch Fiber paper. Each photograph focuses on objects and places them in a setting reflecting a human scenario, personifying the objects and providing a story for the scene."
From the collection, here are my favorites:

"Dark Alley Confrontation."

"Girls' Day Out."

"Dragon Slayer."
About "Tiny Lives":
We are surrounded, and in fact outnumbered, by objects. They are inanimate and yet say so much about their owners, but they do not often get to speak for themselves. I wanted to use this series as a visual and dramatic representation of human scenarios so that we as people will take a step back and think about what our belongings say about us and what objects say about the world at large. Playing with scale and angles to animate the inanimate, I placed these items in situations in which we as humans may find ourselves. This series shows the humor and drama I have found within the patterns and juxtapositions of common objects. By displaying objects in this way, I hope to better convey the way I see the world while asking viewers to look at their possessions, as well as themselves, in a different light.

friday: playlist no. 3.
DC, I'm coming home! I love Peru. Truly. Extremely. Wholeheartedly. However, my home is my home. And, I'm absolutely, completely, 100% excited to go home and see my two babies (aka. shepherds), Mia & Kobi. Three weeks without them is honestly, ultimately, absolutely painful. I miss their smell, their puppy eyes, their slobbery kisses, etc, etc. Any dog-lover can relate, I hope. As I board my plane right now, here's my latest mini playlist that I'm currently listening to.
Adios, Peru. ¡Vemos pronto en Octubre, 2010!

peru, may 2010 - pt. two.
Wow. Time flies by incredibly quickly. Just a few weeks ago, I arrived in Lima, Peru. And now, in just two days, I head back home to DC. My stay here was 98% perfect, with 2% stress. 1% of dealing with business-related anxiety and another 1% of dealing with wedding planning. Not bad, I have to say. Though, I must sincerely thank my family, for without them, my stress levels could have been drastically higher.
16 days, and I have taken over 700 photos, which is quite a lot for me. So rather than ramble on and on, here's my second set of photos. This edited set was taken on the second day of my trip, which includes images of my favorite area of Lima, Barranco. Barranco, which borders Miraflores by the Pacific Ocean, is known as the city's bohemian district, home or once home of many Peruvian writers and intellectuals like Mario Vargas Llosa, Chabuca Granda and Alfredo Bryce Echenique. I love, love, love this area, and truly hope one day to live in Barranco, with my love, and my two dogs (temporarily, that is).
To see the complete set of photos, please visit de*nada's facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/denadadesign
*Note: All online orders placed between April 27th - May 14th will not be processed until Monday, May 17th. We apologize for the inconvenience.

happy birthday kelly!
It's my lovely fiance's birthday today! Since we've been working incredibly hard these past few days here in Peru, we decided to take the entire day off today and just relax. Our plans for today: go and see Mario Testino's exhibition at the Museum of Art, check out some nearby attractions, grab lunch at a cevicheria, and go out dancing tonight.
Much love,
de*nada.

peru, may 2010 - pt. one.
An early drive to the airport, followed by a $16 fruit plate for breakfast, a semi-empty plane to San Salvador, followed by one layover, two glasses of "red" to calm the nerves, a few giggles, followed by 3-4 thousands miles on a packed flight, a so-so movie, a quick nap ... and poof, we're in Lima, Peru.
Though exhausted, my fiance and I were really happy to finally arrive in Lima. For weeks now, we've been looking forward to coming here for many reasons: to complete de*nada's holiday collection, attend Peru Moda, plan our wedding, and also visit my family. Overall, we were anxious and ready to start our to do's promptly. After picking up our suitcases, we were greeted by my aunts and uncles, who drove us to their home in La Molina ... where you can guess, we pretty much passed out quickly in our bed, asleep like babies.
The following day, proved to be an extremely busy one. We were awake by 5am for a quick jog, a meeting at 7 and 8:30am, followed by a long drive to Callao for Peru Moda. Upon arrival, we were extremely impressed by the venue, La Forteleza de Real Felipe, a fortress built to defend the main Peruvian port and the city of Lima during colonial times. Impressed by the exteriors, we quickly entered the venue where began our tour throughout the trade show.
Overall, we enjoyed Peru Moda; the vendors, its layout, and by far its professionalism; and look forward to attending it again the following year. After hours of walking the show and networking with others, we left extremely content with what we had accomplished in one day. Although my feet were aching and my body ready to collapse, I was looking forward to the next work day with high expectations.
Below, are a selection of photos from our trip so far. To see more, please visit our de*nada's facebook page at: http://www.facebook.com/denadadesign
